Tips on Socks for Patients With Diabetes

There are people who don’t put on clean or dry socks in the morning, and they may also continue to wear their shoes or socks when they get wet. Dry feet are as important as clean feet because damp feet can contribute to infections. Even if you are unable to reach your feet or bring your foot up to clean it, you must make an extra effort to be sure to dry them, as well, especially between the toes if you are at risk for foot ulcers.

Some people don’t put on socks at all. Socks are important to preventing corns, calluses blisters that can form next to bunions or digital deformities and infection because they act as a protective barrier between the shoe and the foot.

• Put on clean or dry socks in the morning
• Wear socks at all times
• Never wear open-toed sandals, flip-flops, or any type of shoe without socks
• Make sure your socks are not folded over, wrinkled, or have rough edges
• Choose hi-bulk acrylic and stretch nylon socks that do not have elastic at the top
• Select latex-free fibers that contain no harmful dyes or additives
• Use bleach when washing socks
• Replace socks if they begin to show signs of wear.
